Patient Education Update: Music as Environmental Design

Fall 2013 — Beep, beep, beep, the IV has run dry. Screech, screech, bang, a meal cart is rolling down the hallway. Doors slam, more beeps. No end to the sounds and lights in the hospital. It’s hard to rest, hard to sleep. Senses work overtime, even as your body wants to recuperate. But comfort is hard to come by and the overall environment isn’t conducive to rest and healing.

As healthcare providers and patient educators, how do we provide an environment that facilitates the healing process? How do we provide an environment in which patient, educators, and families can engage in meaningful conversations about the patient’s condition?
