Summer, July 4th, and Humus

Monday, July 10th, 2006

Summer seems to start on Memorial Day and then, once July 4th is in the past, I begin looking to the fall. All the summer clothes go on sale and even fall school supplies may seep into the stores. However, this July 4th was not ss others. The world is in turmoil; this country is in conflict with itself; the very foundation of our roots is being fought over in the immigration debate, and the war on terrorism seems to be at a draw. So, I question form myself, how do I move the this season of summer and full moons in ways that can sustain hope and determination and caring and a sense of possibility? Eat!

Humus is part of our routine. I have eaten it as long as I can remember. Coming from Detroit, with such a large Caldian/Lebanese population, I have enjoyed the best of the cuisine. I think that if we all started a rush on Humus, Kabob, Taabouli, used more saffron and dill…shared the foods of the middle east, maybe our hearts would change in the collective.

I eat Challah when my sister comes every year as part of Shabbos; We eat Daal, aloo gobi, and naan often. We eat Chinese food (isn’t that asian Jewish?) and pasta.

Truly I am thinking that the way out of all conflicts is at the kitchen table, mixing cuisines and just being honest about what tastes good.

We could even have hospital food become ethnic healthy, as most cuisines are healthier that the current “super-size-me” menu.

Hmm. What do you think??
