The
Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute is one of the nation's leading cancer
research, treatment, and education centers. Affiliated with the Detroit Medical
Center, the Institute operates one of the few National Cancer Institute-designated
Comprehensive Cancer Centers and is a United Way-supported agency.
Before a patient even walks through the doors
of the Institute, a gentleman by the name of Clyde lets them know that they
are entering a healing environment. Impeccably dressed in a tuxedo, Clyde greets
patients as they get out of their cars and assists them -- be it providing a
wheelchair, oxygen care or simple a warm smile and a firm arm to steady them.
Several years ago, the Institute set out
to redesign a number of areas throughout the hospital to create a more patient
centric environment. The $15 million project included
two Inpatient
Units, the Walt Breast Center, Wertz Outpatient
Center, and the Hudson-Webber Research Building.
The Institute broadcasts The
C.A.R.E. Channel on the hospital television on its inpatient units.
The C.A.R.E.
Channel helps decrease our patients anxiety," says Dore Shepard,
R.N., Administrative Manager. "The scenes are tranquil and especially
appropriate for oncology particularly our hospice patients.
